Peruvian textile exports totalled US$421 million from January to May this year, up 75.1 percent from the same period in 2020, according to the National Society of Industries (SNI) on Thursday.
The SNI emphasised that the value of exports in May 2021 was US$96 million, the most in the previous 22 months. Exports were severely harmed in 2020 as a result of worldwide restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 epidemic. Garment shipments totalled US$240 million in the January-May period, down from $409 million in 2019. The high value exported in May 2021 (US$96 million) was not recorded since July 2019 (US$97 million).
Peruvian clothing exports to the United States accounted for 69 percent of overall shipments, with sales totaling $289 million between January and May 2021. Exports to the United States (15.3 percent) increased that month compared to the pre-pandemic level, as did exports to Brazil (25 percent) and Canada (77 percent ) “This suggests a good prognosis for exports to our key trading partners,” according to the Institute of Economic and Social Studies (IEES).
T-shirts and knitted shirts (about US$130 million); knitted shirts for men and boys (approximately US$47 million); sweaters, pullovers, and similar products (approximately US$26 million); and other knitwear (approximately US$19 million) were the primary commodities shipped to this target country.
