For a new pilot project in India, the Organic Cotton Accelerator (OCA) programme has partnered with retailer Tchibo, textile producer Dibella, Fairtrade Germany, and the German development organisation GIZ.
Over 500 cotton farmers in the Indian states of Odisha and Telangana will get financial assistance, organic cotton growing training, and non-GM seed. The goal is to collect 250 tonnes of organic cotton – as well as cotton from conversion fields – every year. During the three-year ‘in-conversion’ period, farmers will also get a Fairtrade payment.
The Organic Cotton Association is a non-profit organisation that promotes organic OCA has launched a pilot project in India in collaboration with its German partner Tchibo. The goal is for companies and retailers to commit to long-term organic cotton procurement agreements. OCA will be in charge of measuring and validating the project’s impact. India, which is currently the world’s top organic exporter, accounts for more than half of all sustainable cotton.
