Tamil Nadu, which boasts of textile and apparel manufacturing hubs like Tirupur, Coimbatore, Salem and Erode, will see its legislative assembly elections in another 5 months – May 2021 to be precise.

But political parties have starting playing the blame game with regard to the struggling conditions of apparel industry in the state. MK Stalin, President, DMK, has criticised the Union and State Governments for the same.

Addressing cadres of Tirupur district, he said that Tirupur is an example of the consequences of the wrong economic policies of the Central Government, as GST exacerbated the condition of industries that were already affected by demonetisation in 2016.

All this has eventually led to a downturn in exports and manufacturing.

“From being known as dollar city because of the foreign exchange it generated through exports, Tirupur has now become dull city as exports have been further hit due to COVID-19, he said.

He also added that construction works for several flyovers and a ring road within the limits of the Tirupur Corporation were started when the DMK was in power, but were stalled by the AIADMK Government, leading to traffic congestions in the city.

The long-pending ESI Hospital too has not been established in Tirupur yet.

The DMK President said that it is mainly due to the wrong policies of Union Government that Tirupur’ apparel industry has not been able to achieve its export target.

MK Stalin has assured that if elected to power, the DMK will form a committee comprising experts from various businesses and will implement their suggestions for Tirupur.
