Students from all across the world are being invited to enter the 2024/2025 International Design Competition, which has as its topic “Colour for Good – Creativity in Adversity,” by the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC). For undergraduate and graduate students studying fashion and textile design at SDC member colleges, the yearly competition offers a worldwide stage where they may demonstrate their originality, foresight, and creative solutions to contemporary industry problems.

The SDC International Design Competition is renowned for encouraging the upcoming generation of designers to explore the environmental, artistic, and scientific effects of color in the textile sector. With a focus on sustainability, this year’s subject asks participants to consider how creativity can flourish in trying circumstances. Students will learn more about the difficulties in the textile supply chain and show how color can be a positive force in a society where social and environmental problems are becoming more prevalent through their submissions.

Under the direction of their tutors, participants will create designs that are both aesthetically pleasing and consistent with sustainable principles. Designs will be evaluated based on their creative use of color, materials, and sustainability. In addition to receiving international media attention, the winner of each national heat will go on to the global grand finale, which will take place in late 2025 and award the ultimate winner with a trophy and £1,000.

Clare Moore, SDC membership manager, commented on the launch of the competition: “We’re incredibly excited to see what this year’s entrants create. Last year’s designs were exceptional, and we’re expecting equally impressive submissions in 2025. With this year’s theme, we want students to consider the deep relationship between colour, its science, and its heritage, as well as how they can use it to inspire resilience and sustainability.

“We understand that this is a challenging brief, but participating in the competition has the potential to be a career-defining experience for many. I encourage entrants to explore the impacts of their colour choices carefully, considering factors like energy use, waste reduction, and social impact.”

The competition is open to students currently enrolled at SDC college member institutions, and interested tutors and students are encouraged to reach out for further information about the benefits of SDC membership. For inquiries and to register interest, please contact [email protected].
