At a function held at the CIDCO Convention Centre, Vashi, in the presence of Ms. Roop Rashi, Textile Commissioner & Vice Chairperson, Textiles Committee, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, and Shri Kailas Shinde, Commissioner, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), the Hon. Chief Minister, Shri Eknath Shinde, launched the Textiles Committee’s pilot project on Sustainability in Textile Value Chain with the goal of promoting and adopting sustainability in the textile value chain.

By making it easier for post-consumer textiles in Navi Mumbai to be collected, sorted, segregated, and upcycled or recycled, the project will contribute to the circularity of textiles. On this occasion, the Textile Commissioner and Vice Chairperson of the Textiles Committee also attended the opening of the Textiles Recovery Facility (TRF), which was built on more than 3000 square feet of ground close to Gavaskar Maidan in Belapur. Additional dignitaries in attendance included Shri Jagjit Singh Kandal, Country Head, IDH, Shri Shyam Pattnaik, M/s Grasim Industries, Shri Aman Bhaiya Vice-President, SBI Foundation, and Shri Kartikay Dhanda, Secretary, Textiles Committee, Dr. Tapan Kumar Rout, Director (MR) & Project Coordinator, Textiles Committee, and Shri Sanjay Prakash, Managing Director, SBI Foundation.

The Textiles Committee, the Ministry of Textiles, the Government of India, NMMC, the SBI foundation, the Tisser Artisan Trust, and IDH India are working together on this project to manage Post Consumer Textiles (PCT) in Navi Mumbai, which is anticipated to produce 2.54 kilos of textile waste annually in the future.

Involving 80 Self Help Groups (SHGs), this project is anticipated to provide around 500 employment possibilities in the NMMC area and will thus be crucial in generating livelihoods and jobs. Additionally, it will assist in rerouting PCT from entering landfills and waterways toward the generation of wealth and the efficient use of resources, protecting the environment and ecology in Navi Mumbai while also generating “waste to Wealth”

The project, which is unique in the nation, is anticipated to significantly improve the natural ecology in and around Navi Mumbai, create jobs, and adopt circularity in textiles. It will also serve as a model for similar initiatives in other regions of the nation.
