Gujarat, a western Indian state, has emerged as a leading force in cotton cultivation, a cornerstone of its agricultural sector. The state’s impressive growth in cotton production over the past two decades has solidified its position as the second-largest cotton producer in India.
Agriculture Minister Raghavji Patel highlighted the state’s cotton cultivation success on Sunday, emphasising its crucial role in Gujarat’s economy. “Since the state’s formation, cotton productivity has increased by a substantial 459 kg per hectare,” he said.
Key factors contributing to this growth include the development of Gujarat’s hybrid-4 cotton variety, which initiated a nationwide hybrid cotton revolution, and the state’s commitment to innovation in agricultural practices.
Cotton, often referred to as the “white gold,” has been an integral part of Gujarat’s agricultural landscape for decades. The state’s cotton cultivation area has expanded significantly, reaching an impressive 26.8 lakh hectares. This growth has been accompanied by a surge in production, with Gujarat producing 92 lakh bales of cotton at a productivity rate of 589 kg per hectare.
Gujarat’s success in cotton cultivation has not only met domestic demand but has also made the country a significant exporter. In 2021, India set a new record by exporting cotton worth $10.78 billion.
Minister Patel expressed optimism about Gujarat’s future in cotton production, stating that with continued efforts and state-supported initiatives, the state is poised to become the hub of cotton production in India.
