Sleever will receive Carbios Active, a PLA biodegradation enzyme, from the France-based biochemistry company. A long-term, exclusive agreement has been reached by the two businesses to jointly create home compostable, biodegradable, mono-oriented transverse shrink films.
Carbios Active will be incorporated by the partners into PLA film production. Polylactic acid is 100% compostable through its enzymatic biodegradation process, even at room temperature. This increases the material’s compostability, which is often limited to regulated temperatures and industrial settings.
The final sleeves will be utilized for mass retail and luxury products packaging security, labeling, and wrapping applications.
“Our collaboration with Sleever to introduce biodegradable sleeves into the market creates fresh business prospects for Carbios, especially in the wine and spirits industry where Sleever is a frontrunner,” stated Emmanuel Ladent, CEO of Carbios.
“These kinds of packaging become compostable at room temperature because Carbios Active is included in the formula; this helps to contribute to a more sustainable packaging industry.
“Carbiolice, a business within the Carbios Group, created the enzyme. It makes it possible to gather PLA plastic packaging along with bio-waste and recover it via methanization or industrial or home composting. The enzyme is incorporated straight into the rigid or flexible PLA packaging manufacturing process without requiring any modifications to the production lines.
