Borealis seeks to substitute recycled plastics with virgin raw material-based plastics while preserving the material’s characteristics. Borealis has committed to using 30 metric kilotons of Finnish plastic waste as a raw material by 2035, which is its first KGD commitment. Among the first businesses to sign up for the Finnish Environment Ministry’s Circular Economy Green Deal is Borealis.

As of September 12, 2024, Borealis has become a part of the Circular Economy Green Deal (KGD) announced by the Finnish Environment Ministry. As part of the voluntary KGD commitment, member organizations pledge to consume fewer natural resources and to establish practical objectives that support the development of a low-carbon, circular economy. Borealis intends to increase its energy efficiency by 360 GWh and use 30 kg of Finnish plastic waste as a raw material by 2035. These pledges are in line with the SPIRIT initiative, spearheaded by Borealis in Finland. The program’s objectives are to transition Finland’s plastics sector to employing renewable raw sources, reaching carbon-neutral production, and creating a circular economy for plastics.

“The Economy in Circles” The Green Deal is greatly appreciated. Its objectives and course of action are in perfect harmony with Borealis’s sustainability objectives and its EverMindsTM aspiration to accelerate circularity. The circular economy will open up new prospects for Finland, as the Green Deal lays out a long-term goal for the nation’s path towards increased sustainability.
