According to Bloomberg, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made this decision in order to further strengthen Turkey’s standing internationally. Turkey may formally submit its application to become the first NATO member of the BRICS at the next meeting in Russia.

Turkey’s intention to join the BRICS is consistent with its larger multi-vector diplomacy approach, which aims to balance influence in a number of geopolitical arenas. In the midst of regional unrest brought on by the Gaza War and Israel’s rivalry, Turkey looks to take advantage of opportunities abroad, as evidenced by its recent efforts to sell natural gas to Europe. Ankara’s goal to conduct business in regions with less stringent political regulations is highlighted by this economic diplomacy, and BRICS provides a forum for such maneuvering.

In a world where conventional alliances are eroding, Turkey’s innovative approach to international relations is advantageous. In order to preserve its distinct geopolitical role, Turkey seeks to cooperate with both Western and non-Western blocs. This dual approach highlights Turkey’s potential as a “bridge country,” as seen by its role in both conflict resolution and dialogue facilitation. Turkey’s policy, however hazardous, puts it in a position to significantly influence the future geopolitical order at a period of intensifying global rivalry.
