A memorandum of understanding (MOU) has been struck by Toray Composite Materials America, Inc., a prominent producer of prepreg and carbon fiber materials, and Elevated Materials to provide repurposing services for the latter’s Tacoma, Washington, factory. Elevated Materials plans to recycle Toray’s scrap prepreg materials, which include full-width and slit-edge prepreg sheets, over the course of the next three years.

Through its upcycling method, Elevated Materials, a company committed to eradicating carbon fiber waste in the aerospace industry, has effectively diverted 200,000 pounds of carbon fiber trash. This waste is converted by the company into press-cured carbon fiber sheets, plates, and blocks that are used in a variety of industries, such as drones, manufacturing accessories, and sports equipment.

This collaboration demonstrates the two businesses’ common dedication to sustainable solutions that minimize waste, preserve resources, and lessen pollution. Elevated Materials CEO and creator Ryan Olliges emphasized the teamwork by saying, “Together, we are making significant strides towards a more sustainable future.”

The MOU is in line with Toray’s environmental goals, which include resource management that is sustainable and reaching net zero emissions by 2050. Toray’s senior vice president of operations, Jeff Hawkey, highlighted the initiative’s contribution to lowering the company’s environmental impact and establishing a new benchmark for ethical production.
