Ahmedabad, India – In a significant development, the special investigation team (SIT) responsible for tackling cheating and fraud cases within the textile sector has transformed. The SIT, originally formed in 2020, has been renamed the “New Cloth Market Wing” and brought under the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the city’s crime branch.
Previously, only textile traders within the jurisdiction of Sector 2 could approach the SIT with their complaints. However, the need for a more inclusive approach became evident following extensive deliberations and discussions with textile traders. As a result, all textile traders in the city will now have the opportunity to lodge complaints with the newly formed “New Cloth Market Wing.”
Ahmedabad City Police Commissioner GS Malik issued a recent notification, announcing the change. Under the new structure, the EOW will oversee the operations of the renamed wing. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of the EOW will appoint a police inspector to lead the wing’s operations and ensure effective tracking of offenses and applications every fortnight.
Bharti Pandya, DCP of EOW, emphasized the expanded scope of the New Cloth Market Wing, stating, “The wing will receive complaints from all five textile associations and any individuals who become victims of cheating cases within the textile industry.” The newly appointed police inspector, C.B. Gamit, will be supported by 11 personnel who adhere to a standardized operating procedure.
Establishing the SIT in 2020 responded to the rise in cheating and fraud cases affecting textile traders. Operating under the previous framework, the SIT helped recover traders’ funds from different states. Many fraudsters exploited the practice of offering credit periods, duping unsuspecting textile traders. With the expansion of the New Cloth Market Wing’s jurisdiction, the authorities aim to offer greater assistance to all textile traders and manufacturers facing similar challenges.
This revision will likely strengthen the textile sector’s ability to combat fraudulent activities and create a more robust business environment.
