A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by the Taiwan Textile Research Institute (TTRI) and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) to work together to improve the capacity of Bangladesh’s readymade garment industry in the areas of product development, particularly in the production of high-end products made of manmade fibre (MMF).
The MoU also aims to promote cooperation in the development of the industry’s capacity through the exchange of information and skills in resource efficiency, innovation, and technological adaption. Promoting direct or joint venture investments from Taiwan to Bangladesh in non-cotton textiles, high-end apparel items, technological textile, woven textile and garment, skills development, and innovation is another goal of the agreement.
The agreement was signed while BGMEA was putting up great effort to pursue a greater development outlook for Bangladesh’s RMG sector through a shift away from cotton products and towards non-cotton ones, particularly those composed of man-made fibre.
The MoU was signed on behalf of each party by TTRI Vice President Sheng-fu Chu and BGMEA Director Asif Ashraf. BGMEA Directors Faisal Samad and Abdullah Hil Rakib, as well as Justin Huang, president of the Taiwan Textile Federation, were present at the MoU signing ceremony on May 4 in Taipei, Taiwan.
According to the agreement, Taiwanese businesses would also collaborate under this banner to impart their technical know-how to Bangladeshi businesses.
Additionally, it will make it easier for business and academic institutions to work together to identify potential development areas, build capacity, and provide students with the information and skills they need to take on new challenges.
Working along with Taiwan Textile Federation and the Taiwan Textile Research Institute will assist Bangladeshi clothing manufacturers in recognising the advantages that Taiwanese businesses have.
Stakeholders in this research cooperation could include BGMEA, the Centre of Innovation, Efficiency and Occupational Safety and Health (CIEOSH), BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology, and other universities.
Around 100 researchers are employed by Taiwan Textile Research Institute, which can assist Bangladesh’s apparel industry in understanding its future needs and developing a roadmap for the next 15 years to increase its capacity and capability in terms of product developments and other areas.
