By amending the Factories Act, major industrial states have taken the lead in lowering labour restrictions for a few sectors, but the Centre has not yet put the labour codes approved by Parliament into effect.
States like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are looking at similar modifications to make their labour rules flexible, while Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have increased the work hours from eight to twelve per day for four days a week. States can change their labour laws as they see fit because labour is a concurrent issue, but they must have the president’s approval before doing so.
