The textile weavers are demanding extension of BIS rule on various yarn
The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has postponed the BIS(Bureau of Indian Standard) rule on MEG (raw material of yarn) till June 28, 2023. However, the textile weavers are disappointed as there is no announcement for relief on yarn. The Southern Gujarat Chambers of Commerce & Industry(SGCCI) and other textile organizations are demanding a one year extension period for implementation of BIS rule on yarn.
In order to improve the quality of yarn and raw materials, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers issued a circular that from April 3, the yarn and MEG can be produced and sold as per BIS standards. The textile industry worried about this rule. As per the industry, only 40 percent of the yarn produced in the country are BIS certified and if this law is implemented, there will be a ban on imported polyester yarn. As a result, thousands of powerlooms will shut. More than 25 lakh rupees have to be spent to develop a BIS laboratory. Because of this, the textile industry is demanding extension of time. A proposal was also made by SGCCI to extend the implementation deadline on yarn. After the presentation from textile industry, the government has posponed the decision of implemention of BIS rule on yarn till June 28.
Mayur Golwala, a textile industrialist, said that, the time limit that has been extended at present is on the raw material of yarn. The BIS rule on yarn should also be extended. The government has instructed to implement the rules in a very short period. At present, only few yarn manufacturers have BIS certificate. Also, there is confusion about developing a laboratory and following various rules and regulations. The government should first hold a meeting with the yarn industrialists, weavers and also consider their problems regarding the implementation of BIS. Last week, in a meeting with the officials of the BIS department, we had demanded to extend the implementation of BIS on various yarns.
