With rising energy costs on the one hand and a severe energy scarcity on the other, the need for energy conservation has taken on paramount importance in the textile industry. The severe power shortage that resulted in a higher reliance on captive power through gensets over the past five years has hurt textile mills, particularly in the South, and sharply increased the cost of electricity. This has also helped to raise awareness of the need to discover solutions to reduce energy costs and improve the effectiveness of the entire manufacturing process. The cost of energy makes up between 15% and 20% of the entire cost of production.

A key issue beyond the expense of power is the lack of labour, which is causing the mills to use more automated machines. As a result, when textile machinery manufacturers incorporate automation into their products, mills’ power needs continue to increase.

Manufacturers look for ways to lower manufacturing costs without compromising product yield or quality as they compete in an increasingly competitive global market. Costs and value added at the business are increasing as a result of rising energy prices. The difficulty of maintaining product quality despite lower manufacturing costs is met by successful, cost-effective investments in energy-efficiency technologies and processes. This is particularly crucial in the modern day, when energy-efficient technology frequently come with “extra” advantages like raising business productivity or lowering water and/or material use.

Several energy-efficiency systems are now in use. Yet, even the several inexpensive solutions are frequently not chosen in due to the fact that the bulk of textile factories are run by SMEs with inadequate funding and operational expertise.

The Textile Magazine has long emphasised the value of protecting natural resources and using them wisely. This edition of the magazine focuses on the energy conservation measures taken by top textile manufacturers to lower production costs and consequently conserve energy.
